ILL Clan Fact Sheet

  • The ILL Clan is an independent animation studio based in Brooklyn, New York that uses 3D computer game technology to create animated shorts. This process is known as Machinima (pronounced Ma-sheen-eh-ma).

  • Machinima is the process by which 3D animation is created within a real-time computer game environment. Rather than render animation frame by frame, machinima is animated and rendered simultaneously within the computer hardware.

  • Machinima is traditionally found within computer games for use as cinematic cut-away scenes. This emerging medium has grown beyond its original use within games, and has been added as a category to a number of film festivals and even has its own annual festival. For info on the Machinima Film Festival, visit the Academy of Machinima Arts & Sciences: www.machinima.org.

  • Currently the ILL Clan uses a modified version of the GarageGames Torque Engine, to create their animation. This low cost game engine allows the ILL Clan programmers to access and change the underlying programming as needed.

  • All art and animation used in the ILL Clan's machinima is created by the ILL Clan, or by other designers who contribute to our projects.

  • When creating animation, the ILL Clan's characters are manipulated like puppets by puppeteers and the action is recorded by a virtual camera within the networked computer, 3D environment.

  • The ILL Clan's short, "Hardly Workin'," released in 2001, has won numerous awards at film festivals around the world, including:

Best Experimental Short - Showtime Networks' Alt.Sho Awards - 2001 (New York, USA)
Best of Show - Showtime Networks' Alt.Sho Awards - 2001 (New York, USA)
Best Animation - Pixxelpoint Computer Graphics Festival- 2002 (Nova Gorica, Slovenia)
Best Micro-budget Film - Festival of Cinema and Technology - 2002 (Toronto, Canada)
Best Virtual Performance - Machinima Film Festival 2002 (Dallas Texas, USA)

  • The animated short, "Common Sense Cooking," created live in front of a theater audience at the 2003 Florida Film Festival, won Best Virtual Performance at the Machinima Film Festival 2003.

  • The ILL Clan's animated characters co-hosted the 2004 Florida Film Festival awards gala, and helped present awards to the festival winners and interacted with the events human host.

  • The ILL Clan's voice-actors/puppeteers have close to 10 years experience improvising in clubs and theaters in New York City.

  • Paul Marino, Director of "Hardly Workin'," is now the Executive Director of the Academy of Machinima Arts and Sciences and author of the book 3D Game-Based Filmmaking: The Art of Machinima (Paraglyph Press).

  • The first ever live Machinima performance was performed at the 2003 Florida Film Festival by the ILL Clan. The show, Common Sense Cooking was a mock cooking show, improvised based on a suggestion from the live audience. The creation of the show was documented by the Discovery Channel and is available on our movies page. Since then, the ILL Clan has returned to perform live at the festival in 2004, and has also performed live at venues in New York City.

  • The ILL Clan's latest production is the gaming news and comedy talk show, Tra5hTa1k with ILL Will.
